"To His Coy Mistress," by Andrew Marvell reveals a man's lust and longing for a woman. According to Wikipedia , there is no known date of this poem. Time is possibly the most important theme in this poem. Marvell illustrates this theme in the first line, and keeps referring to time throughout the rest of the poem as well. The main character's desire and love for a woman is embedded in the first stanza when he allots time to adore each particular part of the woman's body. The speaker is very open about taking their relationship to a more sexual level.

ThemesEdit

Time is the undeniable theme depicted in the poem. In the first stanza, the speaker wants more time to spend admiring the woman's body, so he can show his love to her both physically and mentally. In the second and third stanzas the speaker is ellaborating about running out of time and about the amount of time they have to spend together as a couple. He wants to eventually reach her heart which brings us to the theme of love.

In my opinon, this is an example of "bad love" because there is something blocking him from just being in a relationship with this woman. The speaker is in a dimemna because he has such a strong love for this woman, but no way to show her about this love.

The woman is preserving her virginity and he keeps pushing the issue of time. The speaker could just be tired of waiting, but I do not think that is the case. I think this poem is describing a relationship between an older couple. The speaker desires more time to spend on allotted parts of the woman's body, to show her how much she is appreciated. Also, in the third and final stanza, the speaker refers to their actual deaths and his own ashes.
